Holistic Healing

Eliminating “Junk DNA”

dna-holistic-healingAccording to new research by Dr. Theresa Dale, each cell in our body contains a “a holographic blueprint of all experiences, identities and beliefs.” This means we may inherit many genetic behaviors that could include disease patterns.

“By contacting cellular intelligence, one can locate and eliminate the precise core identities and beliefs transforming the cellular blueprint and reestablishing healthy cellular communication and wellness,” says Dr. Dale. This approach to the emotional origins of disease is called NeuroPhysical Reprogramming™ (NPR). It’s a non-invasive method that diagnoses the cause of the disease and rejuvenates the body.

Kung Fu Embodies Holistic Health Concepts

martial-arts-holistic-healthTraditionally, Chinese martial arts practitioners had to study medicine before being allowed to start learning combat techniques. Today, some martial arts such as wing chun kung fu still come with holistic health benefits for the mind, body and spirit.

“It wasn’t how well you looked physically, but how well your immune system worked against environmental, physical and mental abuses,” said kung fu instructor Daniel Xuan. “Consequently, this outlook was adapted by the founders of martial arts. The arts were built with health, vitality and longevity in mind.”

Nutrition Expert Stella Metsovas Presents Digestive Detox

digestive-cleansing-diet“Digestive Health Detox: 21 Days of Dietary Transformation Designed to Build Health from Within” by Stella Metsovas is a new cleansing diet that combines weight loss with balancing out the digestive process.

Its two main parts are “one ingredient” foods and dietary supplements. The “one ingredient” approach is important because unprocessed food is, as Stella says, “exactly as nature intended it to be.” The dietary supplements are colon cleansers, probiotics, and grapefruit seed extract.

Cleansing Not Just a Fad

cleansing-diet-girlsCleansing is all the rage these days, but it is more than a fashionable health craze: we all need to cleanse once in a while to remove toxins from our systems.

Dr. Pam Booras, a doctor of natural medicine in Ottawa, Canada, says that most doctors agree about the benefits of a short-term detox for those who have no contraindicating medical condition.

“Our atmosphere and ground has become so polluted and our diets are so bad that our bodies can no longer get rid of all of the toxins that it needs to,” Booras said. “Instead, we have to go after those toxins, and detoxification is how we do that.”

Healthy Food

Growing Your Own Super Foods

Super foods are known for being expensive, so why not grow them in your home or garden? Radishes, for example, are super-easy to grow: you can plant them directly in the garden, and all they need is some water.

“High in Vitamin C and teaming with antioxidants, radishes are another anti-cancer vegetable. In addition to this, radishes are among the most alkaline vegetables,” says gardener extraordinaire Pamela Paige. “Alkaline foods are important because they limit the acidity of the bloodstream. Excess acidity is believed to foster the inception and growth of cancer cells.”

 Teaching Kids about Healthy Foods

According to the Huffington Post, ” if you give kids a little ownership in the process, they might be more likely to participate in the finished product. So if they have a stake in menu planning, cooking and preparing meals, it can nudge them to be a little more adventurous with what they’ll try.”

For example, “brother and sister team Greg and Lori Heller of Toronto’s interactive cooking studio and school, The Chef Upstairs, believe teaching kids to be hands-on in the kitchen is a powerful tool in getting kids to try and like different foods.”

“I have seen a huge difference in the children who take classes and what they are willing to try,” says Lori. “They watch the cooking shows and want to be like Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver.”

Detox Diet

The DASH Diet: Does it Really Work?

dash-dietThe DASH diet has become hugely popular in the U.S., especially with the holidays approaching. It promises to help you lose one dress size before Christmas, which sounds too good to be true. But it seems this is not just another fad designed to lure people who are desperate to lose weight for the holidays.

“The diet promises not only to help you lose weight — in particular around your stomach area — but has been proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and developing diabetes,” reports Mandy Francis of the Daily Mail.

So whether you lose just a little or a lot of weight, the DASH definitely sounds like a healthy diet.

Detox Naturally During the Holidays

detox-diet-flowerEveryone knows it’s hard to resist second helpings during those Christmas parties. Your digestive system may become strained over the next few weeks, but there are natural, simple remedies that can counteract holiday overindulgence. Green juices or herbal teas such as peppermint and chamomile can soothe your stomach, and even a simple recipe like lemon and water can do wonders for your digestion.

“Warm lemon water is used in many ancient remedies to alleviate digestive distress, support liver detoxification, normalize digestive juices, and reduce intestinal bloating,” says holistic nutritionist Heidi Fagley, “Lemon activates the liver to release toxins and helps to cleanse and move any roughage that stays behind in the intestines.”

Alternative Health

Mistletoe Has Cancer-Curing Properties

mistletoe-alternative-to-chemotherapyMistletoe, customarily used as a Christmas decoration, has also been used traditionally in European medicine. Now mainstream scientists are finding that Fraxini, a species of mistletoe, effectively kills colon cancer cells. It even seemed to do a better job than chemo. Another potential benefit of mistletoe was its friendliness to healthy cells in comparison with chemotherapy, which is as toxic to the body as it is to cancer cells.

“This is an important result because we know that chemotherapy is effective at killing healthy cells as well as cancer cells. This can result in severe side effects for the patient, such as oral mucositis (ulcers in the mouth) and hair loss,” she adds.

New Bill Could Put Alternative Health Practitioners out of Work

A controversial bill could make it a criminal offense to provide nutritional counseling in Illinois. Only doctors, registered nurses, registered dietitians or pharmacists will be allowed to provide nutritional advice; herbalists, naturopaths, and homeopaths could be facing $10,000 fines.

“A lot of citizens have holistic natural health care practices that talk about nutrition—the life coaches, the herbalists, the naturopaths, the homeopaths,” said attorney Diane Miller. “The fact that the dietitians are saying only they can recommend anything about nutrition is just ludicrous. The freedom of speech issues in this licensing bill are just huge for citizens.”

New Study: Snacking Contributes to Obesity

James Johnson of UBC’s Life Sciences Institute has discovered that mice with higher insulin levels gain more weight. How does this translate to humans? Basically, it could mean we should stop snacking between meals.

“The findings may mean that the key to maintaining a healthy weight is to continually return insulin levels to a healthy baseline by extending the gaps between meals and ignoring the widespread recommendations to consume small amounts throughout the day,” the Vancouver Sun reports, “In other words, cut out the snacks – and make sure not to overcompensate at mealtime.”

Personal Development

Start Fresh with New Year Resolutions

A new year is always a good time to rethink our bad habits and acquire some good ones. Whether you would like to simply have more fun or get ahead in your career, now is the time to plot your course and make your New Year resolutions.

We all have one or two vices that we would like to get rid of in the new year. However, if you attempt to target them all at once, it will probably be too much to handle. “It’s far more realistic to pick one vice (preferably the worst one) and try to give it up,” says Yahoo Lifestyle, “Make sure you tell as many people as possible that you’re trying to kick it, so that you’re accountable to someone other than just yourself if you slip up.”

What’s with all the Consumerism?

consumers-personal-developmentOne of the most-watched environmental videos on the web is The Story of Stuff. It explains how the American government deliberately encouraged people to be consumers in order to revive the post-WWII economy.

The guru and retail analyst of the day, Victor Legough, wrote in 1955: “Our Enormously productive economy…demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…we need things burned up, replaced and discarded at an ever-accelerating rate.”

Health Management

A Daily Activity that Causes Heart Disease

sitting-heart-diseaseMost people think that getting enough exercise and avoiding habits like smoking will ensure a long and healthy life, but there is one more factor to consider: sitting for long periods of time can significantly shorten people’s life span. Even those who walk, run, or swim after prolonged sitting sessions are still at risk of heart disease and cancer.

In order to be a more “stand up” citizen, get up and walk around every half hour. If your job involves long hours of sitting, go grab a snack or stand up and pace when talking on the phone. If you’re too busy to get up, fidgeting is a pretty good substitute.

Natural Ways to Avoid Heartburn

According to Mark Hyman, MD, a functional and integrative physician, most of the drugs doctors prescribe to fight heartburn could do more harm than good. It’s all right to pop a Tums once in a while, but the stronger drugs are not meant for long term use. The best thing is to avoid some of the major causes of heartburn, such as stress.

“When you’re stressed, the LES relaxes and the sphincter at the bottom of the stomach tightens up,” Hyman explains. “The result is food traveling back up your esophagus.” Just breathing deeply while you eat could be enough to prevent heartburn.

Relieve PMS Symptoms

Naturopath Claire Georgiou has come up with some helpful suggestions to combat PMS with a healthy diet and stress-free lifestyle. To get the jump on Aunt Flo, it’s best to initiate these changes about 2 weeks before the period is due.

“Increase your essential fatty acids,” she says, “Increasing your intake of these good fats may reduce PMS symptoms by reducing pro-inflammatory prostaglandins that aggravate PMS such as evening primrose oil, blackcurrent seed oil, borage oil, fish oils, hempseed oil, flaxseed oil and/or krill oil.”
